Laboratory of Biologic Physics

The FisBio - Lab is focused on the development of new tools, comprising computational and experimental advanced methods, aiming to improve the understanding of biological processes at molecular level. Those methods are mainly applied to investigate microorganism vs. environment (host) relationships. Some other biological models are also under study, for instance, prokaryote gene expression and developmental biology.

Our research topics combine bioinformatics, molecular biology tools to explore gene expression regulation and protein biochemistry and biophysics, as follows:

  • Development of bioinformatics pipelines for structural annotation of protein sequences from genomics, metagenomics, proteomics and transcriptomics projects.
  • Innovative approaches in molecular modelling and dynamics simulations applied to protein-protein interaction and drug design.
  • Development of atomic force microscopy and single molecule atomic force spectroscopy tools.
  • Nanotechnology based radio-drugs carriers design.
  • Analysis of molecular mechanism of Vibrio cholerae pathogenicity.
  • Investigation of genetic molecular diversity and physiological responses of potentially toxic cyanobacteria.
  • Characterization of Klebsiella pneumoniae virulence factors to identify molecular targets for the rational design of virulence blockers.
  • Early morphogenesis molecular control on Drosophila melanogaster model.

Our group maintains collaborations with other laboratories in IBCCF as well as in other Institutes in Brazil and abroad, for instance the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in France and the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. We actively participate in several scientific networks, such as RioGene (genome sequencing), Rede de Proteômica do Rio de Janeiro (proteomics) and GenoProt (functional genomics) consortia (Dengue, Vibrios, Leukemia and Biological Nitrogen Fixation), as well as the National Institute of Science and Technology on Structural Biology and Bio-imaging (INBEB).
